Worktops: a huge range of durable materials expertise and experience Solid Wood A solid wood worktop does need to be oiled from time to time. It’s not difficult and to be honest, the need for regular oiling is often exaggerated (particularly by salesmen selling other materials).  Given reasonable care a solid timber worktop will last decades, generations, even centuries. It can be refreshed by sanding many times over. Solid Surface Solid surface worktops have a chipboard substrate over which a 3 - 10mm (typical) layer of acrylic mineral composite is laid. Unlike melamine laminate worktops, solid surface is fully repairable. Even major damage can be corrected by filling with matching resin and refinishing. Sinks and drainer grooves can be integrated with the worktop. Granite The Mondariz granite shown here comes from Spain so the carbon cost of transport is relatively low compared to some other granites. Dense, with a good tight grain, it’s an ideal worktop material with lots of character and very affordable.
